Anniversary Service

The Diocese of Nelson was invited to the 150th Anniversary Service held in the Cathedral on Saturday 27th of September. This marked the exact day when, 150 years ago, a royal charter was signed by Queen Victoria that established both the Anglican Diocese and City.

There was a wonderful mix of dignity and informality as we celebrated 150th years of partnership between the Church and City.

Bishop Richard was re-presented with the taiaha that was originally given to Bishop Hobhouse by local iwi at the time of his departure to England.

Gifts were exchanged between the City and the Church, the city presenting Bishop Richard with a wonderful glass art sculpture and the Diocese presenting Mayor Kerry Mashall with a photographic triptych.

The Cathedral Choir

There was a large combined choir for the event with songs and hymns specially written for the occasion. A new 150th Anniversary banner was also featured along with the city colours. This was made by local craftsperson Bev Payne.

The service featured the following…

  • Multimedia presentation depicting the early development of Nelson
  • Procession with colourful banners and fanfare
  • Awards for the winners of the children's art competition
  • Specially composed commemoration hymn
  • Bishop Richard Ellena preaching

The Anglicans of the Nelson Diocese invite everyone to give thanks to God with them for the establishment of the Diocese and city - the second to be granted city status in the whole country!
